American Optical Sunglasses has been producing eyewear since its humble beginnings in 1833. AO American Optical began a long tradition as the premier supplier of sunglasses to the U.S. Government and U.S. Armed Forces in 1913 with the introduction of American Optical's first 100% UVA and UVB protective Calobar sunglasses lens technology.

In 1958, AO American Optical developed the Aviator Flight Goggle 58, now known as the American Optical Original Pilot Sunglasses (or OPS) for the U.S. Air Force.
